For almost 60 years, he was security chief and personal bodyguard to six popes. He died at the age of 83. He was called “Guardian Angel” to the Pope. In his latter years he strode beside Pope John Paul II’s alpine trips. He accompanied the Pope from the hospital in Rome back to the Vatican. He then presided over the security arrangements for the conclave that elected Benedict XVI.
