Cardinal Christoph Schonborn
Cardinal Christoph Schonborn
The Cardinal-Archbishop of Vienna, Austria, criticized the Vatican for the way it handled the lifting of the excommunication of Bishop Richard Williamson and his views of the Holocaust. The Cardinal said, “Someone (Bishop Williamson) who denies the Holocaust, denies the Shoah, cannot be restored to an office in the Church.”
Rabbi Yehuda Levin
This prominent American Jewish Rabbi who represents more than 1000 Rabbis in North America, defended Pope Benedict in his action of excommunication of Bishop Williamson and three other Bishops. He believes that the strong renunciation of Bishop Williamson’s Anti-Semitic statement should put to rest the suggestion that the Pope is Anti-Semitic.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel
The Chancellor, who is a Protestant, asked for a much clearer statement from the Vatican concerning Bishop Williamson’s case. She felt encouraged to speak out by the fact that Catholic German leaders voiced similar demands.
Guma Aguiar
Mr. Aguiar, an oil magnate who founded Leor Energy and is credited with identifying one of the largest North America natural gas deposits, has donated $8.5 million to two Jewish organizations. Born a Jew, Mr. Aguiar, 31 years old, but raised as an Evangelical Christian, returned to his Jewish roots in the last few years.
Archbishop Jean Jadot
The retired Belgium Archbishop died January 21 at the age of 99. He was the Vatican Nuncio for the United States Catholic Church from 1973 to 1980. His critics accused him of being a liberal clergyman who appointed many liberal minded American Bishops.
Rabbi Leon Klenicki
Our beloved Rabbi died January 25 at the age of 78. This renowned scholar, theologian, and interfaith pioneer received many recognitions and awards for his work.
In August, 2007, Rabbi Klenicki was made a Papal Knight of the Order of St. Gregory the Great by Pope Benedict XVI, becoming only the second interfaith official to receive Papal knighthood. Later that year he was recognized by the Anti-Defamation League for his lifetime dedication and service to ADL, and the Jewish community. He served on our Dialogue Today Advisory Board for the last 10 years. His death is a great loss to the National and International Catholic-Jewish Interfaith work and it is a deep-deep personal loss to me your editor. Editor’s Note: A fuller story in our Editorial section.
Archbishop Timothy Dolan
The Vatican announced the 13th Archbishop of New York, Archbishop Timothy Dolan. The appointment has been received with great joy among the New York priests, deacons, religious communities, and the New York Jewish community. He brings “a breath of fresh air” to the Archdiocese of New York under Cardinal Egan. Because of his gentle and smiling manner, Archbishop Dolan will heal “wounds.”

Hans Kung
Hans Kung
The renowned theologian has criticized Pope Benedict XVI as isolated and unable to take creative steps to deal with a series of internal church questions, including priestly celibacy and birth control. Father Kung has been banned from teaching in any Catholic education facility during the past few years, but remains in good standing in the Catholic Church.
